A non-profit organization (The Ocean Cleanup) has recently begun cleaning up our ocean starting with the Pacific. Dutch inventor Boyan Slat founded Ocean Cleanup back in 2013 in his hometown of Delft, in Netherlands.
Developing advanced technologies and utilizing the ocean currents, this organization is expecting to clean up half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch within the next 5 years time-frame. Sounds a lengthy process? Well, we are talking about 88,000 metric tons of plastic within this patch alone. That’s a lot of plastic floating on our Pacific ocean and frankly, I would be more than happy to see them getting cleaned up within my lifetime. Also, let’s not forget that while the organization is doing their best to clean up our oceans, some will continue to pollute the ocean with plastics in some other parts of the Pacific ocean.

Now, Ocean Cleanup already developed a passive drifting system known as “System 001” and the organization is expecting to start the cleaning process September 16th of this year. Eventually the organization will deploy 60 similar systems that will extract almost 50 percent of the plastic from the entire Pacific garbage patch. Questions is where exactly all these plastics would go? Well, they will be used to create renewable products for consumers.

According to a report published by the World Economic Forum back in 2016, there are 165 million tons of plastics in the ocean all over the world today. On top, every year estimated 9 million tons of plastics are entering into our oceans. If this the way how it continues to go on, by 2025 there would be one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish. By 2050 however, there would be more plastic in our ocean than the fishes as far as their weight is concerned.
