Today, July 28th 2018 marks the 88th Birthday of well respected Bangladeshi singer Feroza Begum. She is well known within in the South Asian diaspora for her extra ordinary contribution to the Nazrul Sangeet.

Begum was born to a Muslim family in 1930 and was attracted to music at a very early stage of her life. At the age of 12, she recorded her first song by Gramophone record company HMV. Number of music album were released later on at different stage of her life which brought her to prominence.

Begum achieved what many in society thought unthinkable for a female – becoming professionally trained in music, achieving a level of stardom and notoriety that was previously reserved for only male musicians.
Firoza Begum was married to Kamal Dasgupta who was also deeply involved with music. Mr. Dasgupta was a music director, composer and folk artist. Two of their sons, Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed are both musicians as well and active member of well known Bangladeshi rock band Miles.
